Former Irish Prime Minister Garret FitzGerald, architect of a landmark Anglo-Irish accord on Northern Ireland, resigned after 10 years as leader of the Fine Gael party. The surprise announcement came one day after Charles Haughey, who heads the Fianna Fail party, winner of last month’s general election, replaced him as prime minister. FitzGerald, 61, said he decided two weeks ago to quit but had waited for the outcome of Tuesday’s parliamentary vote on the country’s new leader, which Haughey narrowly won.
