Deukmejian Names Banking Superintendent

Howard Gould, a former public affairs executive with Wells Fargo Bank, was appointed Monday as superintendent of banks by Gov. George Deukmejian.

Gould, a Republican from Martinez, Calif., had been serving as deputy secretary for the state Business, Transportation and Housing Agency since 1985. Before that, he was chief deputy superintendent of banking. From 1979 to 1983, he was vice president for public affairs at Wells Fargo.

Gould’s appointment to the banking post, which carries a salary of $82,117, is subject to confirmation by the state Senate.
