Navy officials announced that they have changed their minds about phasing out Attack Squadron 122 at Lemoore Naval Air Station. Officials said the squadron’s 427 enlisted personnel, 52 officers and five civilians will remain at the base south of Fresno at least until the early 1990s. Earlier this year, the Navy said it intended to drop the training squadron as the service discarded its older A-7E fighter planes for the newer FA-18s. However, the Navy has decided instead to disband a training squadron at Cecil Field in Florida and keep the one at Lemoore as the only squadron that continues training A-7E air crews.
