Students demonstrated in Ecuador’s three biggest cities against government austerity measures, and riot police routed them with tear gas. The government has raised bus fares and the price of gasoline to discourage fuel consumption and boost revenues after a series of earthquakes caused severe economic damage earlier this month. High schools and university students poured into the streets of Quito, Guayaquil and Cuenca. Some demonstrators threw rocks at police, who waded in to disperse them. There were no immediate reports of injuries.
