Iran claimed that it repulsed several Iraqi attempts to land troops at the strategically located Al Bakr oil platform in the northern Persian Gulf. Iran’s official Islamic Republic News Agency, monitored in Nicosia, Cyprus, said Iranian coastal batteries forced frigates carrying Iraqi marines “to flee without carrying out their mission.” Iraq did not immediately respond to the Iranian claim, and there was no independent verification. The oil platform, which is no longer used to pump oil, is off Iraq’s Faw Peninsula, which was captured by Iran last year.
