At least 17 rebels and two civilians were killed in a retaliatory assault by Colombian troops against about 150 guerrillas who attacked a police barracks. Eight policemen died and five others were wounded in the attack on the barracks. Defense Minister Rafael Samudio Molina said the troops, backed by helicopters, launched the offensive along the northeastern border with Venezuela after two days of rebel violence in the border towns of San Pablo and Convencion. The rebel rampage included bank robberies and the attack on the police barracks by members of the National Liberation Army.
