French police acting on a tip found 24 pounds of explosives behind the false ceiling of a lavatory in the Montparnasse Tower in Paris, authorities said, and a news report linked the find to a terrorist group. The French news agency Agence France-Presse reported that the explosives were placed there several months ago by Max Frerot, a leading member of the left-wing terrorist group Direct Action. The agency said the explosives were to be ignited at a future date to protest French policy in New Caledonia.
