Home Minister Abdul Matin told Parliament this week that 290 Bangladeshi women have been killed and 545 others kidnaped since January, 1986, and police officials said many were slain by their husbands or in-laws for failing to meet dowry demands.

The minister did not give motives for the murders or any further details, but police said that many of the women died after they were tortured by husbands or in-laws demanding dowry from the brides’ families. In some cases, disappointed suitors killed their intended brides by spraying acid on them, police said.

Some men kidnap intended brides if the woman’s parents resist the planned marriage.
