Orange County Roundup : Top U.S. Divers to Compete in McDonald’s Cup
Top U.S. divers, including Olympic gold medalist Greg Louganis, silver medalist Michele Mitchell and bronze medalists Wendy Wyland and Mark Bradshaw, will compete in the McDonald’s Cup III next Friday through March 29 at the Marguerite Recreation Center in Mission Viejo.
The McDonald’s Cup is the third in a four-meet series designed to keep national team members competitive during the off-season. The event will feature men’s and women’s competition in three-meter springboard and 10-meter platform.
Bradshaw recently won the three-meter springboard competition at the U.S. Diving-American Cup II, defeating Louganis. The loss was Louganis’ first in nearly six years.
Tickets are $3 on Friday and $5 on Saturday and Sunday. They can be purchased at the gate. For more information, call 951-6872.
The Cal State Fullerton men’s gymnastics team, ranked second in the nation, will conclude its home schedule tonight by playing host to 12th-ranked Houston Baptist, Brigham Young and UC Santa Barbara in the Titan Gymnastics Invitational at 8 p.m.
Fullerton’s Li Xiao Ping has scored a perfect 10 on the pommel horse six times in international competition, and Houston Baptist’s Paul O’Neill scored a 10 on the rings in a meet last week.
Fullerton, which has had one of its best seasons, is preparing for the NCAA championships, which will be held April 23-25 in UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion. Fullerton has two more meets after tonight, a tri-meet against Cal and Stanford and the Pac-10 Invitationals at Stanford on April 3-4.
The fourth annual Rams Booster Club celebrity golf and tennis tournament will be held March 30 at the Yorba Linda Country Club.
The event, co-chaired by Ram defensive backs Johnnie Johnson and LeRoy Irvin, benefits the Orange County unit of the American Cancer Society and the Orange County Trauma Society.
Check-in is at 9 a.m. and tournament play begins at 11. The entry fees are $150 for golf and $100 for tennis. The fees include court or greens fees, golf cart, lunch and the awards dinner.

A trust fund has been set up for the grandchildren of former Valencia High athletic director and basketball coach Bob Hamblin, a 1982 inductee into the Orange County Sports Hall of Fame.
Hamblin’s son, Steve, was buried Wednesday, the victim of a March 12 assault in Riverside.
Contributions to the fund, which will benefit Steve Hamblin’s daughters, Shelby and Jamie, can be sent to Kramer Junior High School Principal Glen Collard. The senior Hamblin, a United Press Little All-American basketball choice when he played at Chapman College, is a teacher and coach at the junior high, located at 645 N. Angelina Drive, Placentia 92670.

The UC Irvine baseball team will take on Bowling Green State at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Anteaters’ first official night game in their history. It is also City of Irvine Night, and everyone will be admitted free. Pregame ceremonies will begin at 6:30. . . . Still hopeful of another crack at the world bantamweight title, Albert Davila of Pomona resumes his boxing career Monday night when fights Edel Geronimo of the Philippines in the 10-round feature event at the Irvine Marriott Hotel. A professional since 1973, Davila, 32, is 52-8, which includes a knockout over Frankie Duarte and a decision over former titleholder Lupe Pintor. Davila won the World Boxing Council bantamweight title on Sept. 1, 1983, when he knocked out Kiko Bejines in the 12th round at Los Angeles. Bejines later died from head injuries suffered in the bout. Geronimo is the bantamweight champion in the Philippines and has a 16-1 record.
