AFI FILM FEST: THE FINAL WEEK

“Bell Diamond” (U.S.A., 1986, 5 p.m.). Jon Jost is a film maker who makes Jim Jarmusch look as extravagant as the younger Michael Cimino. Budgets of $10,000 or less are not uncommon for his works--which beggar this frugality with uniquely moving portraits of contemporary America. Here, Jost shows the dissolving marriage of a troubled Vietnam vet--and draws it with honesty, passion and sympathy. The acting, in a lower-key Cassavetes vein, is sometimes remarkable--especially Marshall Gaddis as the vet. Here is an American director who deserves more attention. Recommended.
