Kevin Shoemaker, 12, of Carson earned an honorable mention in the 1987 Reading Is Fundamental national poster contest. Kevin, a seventh-grader at Wilmington Junior High School, placed in the top 50 of the 425,240 contestants who entered.

Rita Retort was elected president of Little Company of St. Mary Hospital’s Centurion Club. The club helps the Torrance hospital raise money.

Ronald Woods, an Inglewood physician, has been elected president of the medical staff at Centinela Hospital.

Stephen P. Haas is the new administrator of the Little Company of Mary Pavilion nursing facility in Torrance.

Joyce Kashiwagi was chosen the 1986 Woman of the Year by the Bird of Paradise chapter of the American Business Women’s Assn. Kashiwagi, a Torrance resident is employed by North American Communications Group in Santa Monica.

James S. Brust, a San Pedro psychiatrist, has been named chief of staff at San Pedro Peninsula Hospital.

Elizabeth (Betty) Robertson has been named by Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley to his Small Business Advisory Committee. She is president of Lyncole Industries of Harbor City.
