The West African nation of Sierra Leone said a security man died in a gun battle with “attackers” in the capital of Freetown, and 16 people were arrested and arms and ammunition seized. A spokesman for the state-run Sierra Leone Broadcasting Service denied reports that there had been an attempted coup against the government of President Joseph Momoh, who came to power in November, 1985. Freetown radio said the exchange of gunfire came when security forces raided a house in the capital. Sierra Leone, a former British colony, gained independence in 1961.
