Leftist rebels attacked a town east of San Salvador, kidnaping the mayor and fighting government troops for two hours, Salvadoran military and guerrilla reports said. The rebels’ Radio Venceremos said government troops sustained “five dead and wounded” in the attack on San Cayetano Istepeque. However, the military said it sustained no casualties. The kidnaped mayor, Gonzalo Alonso Garcia, 64, a member of the ruling Christian Democratic Party, is being held “for investigation,” the rebels said.
