A unit of the Red Brigades terrorist group said it assassinated the Italian air force general in charge of air and space weapons procurement to protest Italy’s participation in President Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative. “No to Italian adhesion to ‘Star Wars’--Italy out of NATO,” was printed on the cover of a leaflet found at several locations after a telephone call to newspaper offices. The leaflet said the Combatant Communist Union shot and killed Gen. Licio Giorgieri “exclusively for his responsibility exercised following the Italian adhesion to the ‘Star Wars’ project.” Italy agreed last December to participate in the research program on a space-based defense against missiles.
