Scientists announced that Hawaii’s Mauna Kea volcano would be the site of the world’s most powerful optical telescope, a 600-inch device expected to be six times more powerful than any in use. The peak was chosen over Mt. Graham in Arizona after a three-year study because it offered a clearer view, National Optical Astronomy Observatories said in an announcement in Tucson, Ariz. NOAO said scientists were to immediately begin studying placement of the $125-million National New Technology Telescope on Mauna Kea, a 13,796-foot peak.
