Bottom Line Ethic in U.S.

Share

I commend Lear for his article. He recognizes the way in which the Great American Dream has become a greedy hunger for the achievement of numbers, while spiritual values are brushed aside.

An example: While visiting England some years ago, it seemed unusual to see most retail stores closed on Sundays. Presumably, the owners practiced the closure in order to allow rest, time with family, and religious observance. It was done with self-respect as well as respect for their employees. Would American retailers consider closing every Sunday? Not if there’s a buck to be made.

Many leaders in business and politics are in positions to re-establish some cultural, humanitarian values, but may be reluctant for fear of competition or a poor image.

The irony is, I imagine, that those who could be most influential are probably inclined to look upon Lear’s advice as foolish. Let’s hope that some of them prove me wrong.
