Unfounded rumors of an impending amnesty for illegal immigrants to Hong Kong have triggered an exodus from China, immigration officials in the British colony said. A senior official said that 4,426 illegal immigrants have been caught so far this year compared with 1,817 in the first three months of 1986. He said there were false rumors in China’s southern province of Guangdong that illegal immigrants would be allowed to stay under an amnesty when Hong Kong’s new governor, David Wilson, arrived next month.
