Athens Smog Level Reported Down in Recent Years

From Reuters

Greek Environment Minister Evangelos Kouloumbis said Friday that smog in Athens had been reduced by more than 35% over the last few years and that the building of a subway system would cut it further.

Kouloumbis told a press conference that Athens had only 16 days of high-level smog in 1986, contrasted with 53 days in 1984.

He said 75% of air pollution in Athens was caused by cars, and a subway system costing $1.2 billion was considered essential because it would help reduce both traffic congestion and smog.
