Developments in Brief : Mauna Kea Chosen for $125-Million Telescope
The National Optical Astronomy Observatories has selected Mauna Kea on the island of Hawaii as site of the world’s most powerful optical telescope.
The agency said scientists will begin studying placement of the 600-inch, $125-million National New Technology Telescope. The agency hopes to complete the project by the mid-1990s. Mauna Kea rises to 13,796 feet above sea level.
The agency runs Kitt Peak National Observatory near Tucson, Ariz., and other optical observatories under contract with the National Science Foundation.
