A remote-control bomb packed with shrapnel and hidden in a van exploded near a paramilitary Civil Guard post, killing one Civil Guardsman and injuring 15 other people, authorities said Saturday.

Although no group claimed responsibility for the Friday blast, officials said they suspected the Basque separatist organization ETA (Basque Homeland and Freedom) was responsible.

Police said the bomb, composed of 66 pounds of explosives, screws and chain links, went off at an entrance to Barcelona’s port at 1:30 p.m.

At the time of the blast, the area was filled with dockworkers on their lunch break, and police said a passing truck loaded with rolls of paper absorbed most of the shock of the explosion.
