Suriname’s National Assembly unanimously approved a draft constitution that would be the framework for a return to democracy after seven years of military rule. The 27-member assembly ratified the document after more than five hours of debate that lasted into the early morning, the Suriname News Agency said. The assembly was appointed by military ruler Desi Bouterse, who seized power in the South American nation of 400,000 in a 1980 military coup. A national referendum on the constitution is to be held within six months.
