Long Beach : Parking Permits Studied

Share

To alleviate what has become a daily parking hassle in some Long Beach neighborhoods, the city is considering requiring permits for overnight parking on public streets.

The city also is considering using “community peer pressure” to get people to use their garages not for storage but for what they were originally intended to accommodate: cars.

During a City Council meeting Tuesday, Councilwoman Jan Hall said a Belmont Shore association already has plans for a “clean up your garage day.”

The council forwarded a Planning and Building Department report, which lists the alternative approaches to solving parking problems in areas such as Belmont Shore, to the Housing and Neighborhoods Committee.

One alternative would require residents to get a permit to park on public streets during night and early-morning hours, and they would have to prove they have no on-site parking. Under the suggested plan, if a city inspection showed that the resident has a garage stuffed with other items, the city would not grant the permit.
