A San Diego City Council committee on Wednesday gave tentative approval to awarding a paramedic contract to Hartson Medical Services. The council’s Public Services and Safety Committee voted, 3-0, to endorse a city manager’s recommendation to retain Hartson’s for 1988 to 1991 for $9.6 million.

Advocates for the runner-up, Buck Medical, asked the committee to reconsider and to give it the contract for a $9.2-million bid. But the committee sided with the city manager, who has said that Hartson has provided excellent service as the current paramedic provider. Analysis by the city manager warned that a transition to a new company could hurt service.
