Tennis star Boris Becker, who is exempt from serving in the West German armed forces because he lives in Monaco, will volunteer for duty anyway, the West German newspaper Welt reported.

A draft term in the armed forces lasts for 15 months, a span that will be increased to 18 months in June. Becker, 19, is exempt from the draft because he established legal residence in Monaco, where there is no income tax, before his 18th birthday, the registration age for the West German military draft.

As a soldier, after a brief basic training period, Becker undoubtedly would spend much more time on the tennis court than the drill field. In West Germany, athletes in the army are assigned to athletic units and excused from drills and maneuvers.
