Marina Sharks Play in National Hockey Tourney

The Marina Cities Sharks, a hockey team of youths 16 through 18 years old, last week won the 12-state Western Regional tournament of the Amateur Hockey Assn. of the United States and will compete in the national tournament this weekend at St. Louis.

The Sharks, who play at the Culver City Ice Rink, will begin the competition Friday against a squad from Michigan. The championship game will be played Sunday.

Coached by Dan Cormier and Owen Kelsall, the Sharks won five straight games in the regionals at Billings, Mont., scoring 24 goals and giving up 12. In Montana, the team’s leading scorers were Frank Balle and Alex Agudelo. Alternating at goalkeeper were Billy Martin and Frank Piranio.

Other team members are Scott Nadler, Robbie Flay, John Timberlake, Jody Berkes, Russell Martin, Brent Reynolds and Mike Donnelly.
