Tustin : Two Areas Move Closer to Annexation by City
Two unincorporated residential neighborhoods north of Tustin are one step closer to joining the city following approval of their annexation requests by the county’s Local Agency Formation Commission.
The five-member commission’s vote Wednesday sets up a public hearing before the City Council to allow any annexation opponents from the two areas to petition against the move, said Richard T. Turner, executive officer of the commission.
If 25% to 50% of the areas’ 6,000 residents oppose annexation, the city will call for a vote of the areas’ residents, Turner said. If more than 50% oppose the plan, annexation will be called off, he said.
The hearing will be scheduled sometime within the next two months, associate city planner Mary Ann Chamberlain said Thursday.
On March 2, the City Council adopted a resolution calling for the annexation of the two areas, totaling 430 acres, after petitions were submitted with the required signatures of 5% of the residents from each area, Turner said.
Chamberlain said residents want to incorporate into the city because they are concerned about efforts by other residents in the areas to incorporate into their own city of North Tustin.
