The General Services Administration announced Thursday that the federal government is buying 1,500 Ford Motor Co. compact sedans equipped with driver-side air bags.

The government landlord agency said the $12-million contract demonstrates its commitment to the safety of federal workers who use automobiles as part of their duties.

The latest purchase brings the number of government vehicles equipped with air bags to 6,500.
