Public Seminars to Mark AIDS Awareness Month

Several free public seminars on AIDS are being offered in Santa Monica which has designated April as AIDS Awareness Month.

“AIDS in the Workplace,” a seminar for business owners, managers and personnel directors, will address legal, insurance, medical and other issues concerning employees or customers with AIDS. The program will meet Wednesday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Miramar Sheraton hotel, 101 Wilshire Blvd.

Moderator Phil Sheley is a training specialist with the AIDS Project of Los Angeles.

Other speakers will include Brent Nance, insurance specialist with the AIDS project; David Schulman, Los Angeles deputy district attorney and head of the AIDS discrimination unit, and Robert Winters, chairman of the infection control unit at St. John’s Hospital. This program is sponsored by the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce.

A pastoral and congregational support group for people with AIDS, sponsored by the Westside Ecumenical Conference, will meet at noon Wednesday. Reservations are required by calling David McAllister at (213) 894-1518.

A Spanish-language program will feature a panel discussion sponsored by the Latino Resource Organization and the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District April 12 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at Virginia Park, 220 Virginia Ave.

Santa Monica and Malibu parents may preview “AIDS Fact and Fiction,” a film to be shown in the schools, at meetings and panel discussions scheduled for 7:30 p.m. April 21 at Lincoln School auditorium, 1501 California Ave., Santa Monica, and April 23 at Webster School auditorium, 3602 Winter Canyon Road, Malibu.

“Health Care Issues and Public Policy” is the title of a videotape and discussion to be sponsored by the American Red Cross from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Santa Monica Area Chamber of Commerce, 1460 4th St.

On April 29, “AIDS Update: Drug and Alcohol Issues,” will be presented at the CLARE Foundation, 909 Pico Blvd.
