Plans to base the battleship Missouri in San Francisco have been dealt a blow in Congress after a subcommittee voted to sharply reduce the Navy’s “home-porting” program. Mayor Dianne Feinstein said she was “absolutely flabbergasted” by the vote, which cut $22 million from the Missouri program. The money was the first installment of $70 million needed to bring the battleship to San Francisco. The action was taken by a House Armed Services subcommittee controlled by U.S. Rep. Ron Dellums (D-Berkeley) who said the money was cut because the committee had “significant environmental concerns” about the impact of the project on the Bay. Both sides in the struggle over the home-porting issue agreed that the issue is far from settled.
