Gromyko Meets New U.S. Envoy

MOSCOW —
Jack Matlock, the new U.S. ambassador, presented his credentials to President Andrei A. Gromyko today and they met privately for half an hour, the embassy said.
Spokesman Jaroslav Verner said he did not know what they discussed. Matlock, 57, served in the Moscow mission twice previously in lesser positions and was President Reagan’s special assistant for Soviet and European affairs before being chosen to succeed Ambassador Arthur A. Hartman.
