With 135 minutes of music on two discs (45 minutes more than on the companion two-record set), this collection presents the Airplane as not just the best band to emerge from the love and Haight scene of San Francisco, but as one of the top American rock bands of its time, period. Most impressive is that it does so without ignoring some of the band’s lesser or offbeat moments--including two time-capsuleish radio commercials for Levi’s. Surprisingly, the highlights come not from Grace Slick’s voice nor Paul Kantner’s hippie/sci-fi vision but from Jorma Kaukonen’s psychedelic blues guitar and Jack Casady’s monumental bass playing. Bonuses: illuminating notes from rock journalist Ben Fong-Torres and generally excellent sound. 1/2
