Fern Shannon Dead at 91; Noted San Diego Socialite

Fern McConville Shannon, a 51-year San Diego resident who was active in the county’s social affairs, died at her home Sunday of liver cancer. She was 91.

Mrs. Shannon is survived by two sons, Don, a correspondent in The Times’ Washington bureau, and Dean, of Auburn.

Mrs. Shannon was president of the San Diego Woman’s Club from 1954 to 1955. She then became president of the San Diego County Woman’s Republican Club.

She served as a United Service Organizations volunteer and a Gray Lady in World War II. In the 1960s, she became a volunteer with United Community Services. At the time of her death, she served on the American College Club of San Diego and on the board of the San Diego Girls Club.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church, 320 Date St.
