Nicaraguan rebels said they shot down a Sandinista government aircraft with a Soviet-made SAM-7 surface-to-air missile. In a rebel radio broadcast, a commando unit of the Nicaraguan Democratic Force said the craft was downed Saturday near Wiwili, in northern Jinotega province near the Honduran border. The rebels did not say what type of aircraft was downed or even if it was a military or civil carrier. The U.S.-backed contras have bought Soviet-made weapons on the international arms market.
