The leaders of the House and Senate select committees investigating the Iran- contra affair agreed Tuesday on a schedule for joint public hearings beginning May 5, a spokesman said.

Panel members, who will focus first on the diversion to the Nicaraguan rebels of profits from the U.S. arms sales to Iran, are expected to question more than 25 witnesses. No details on how the questioning will proceed or who the first witnesses will be were available.

Robert Havel, spokesman for the select House committee, said the first hearing will be in the Senate Caucus Room, site of the Senate Watergate hearings. After that, hearings will be held in four-day blocks--May 11-14, 18-21 and 25-28--moving between the Senate and House hearing rooms.
