Pasadena : Hearing on Alcohol Sales
A controversial plan to ban the sale of alcoholic beverages at mini-markets in gasoline stations in Pasadena will get its first public airing April 27.
The proposal, made by Director Jess Hughston and backed by Police Chief James M. Robenson, is intended to reduce the number of drunk drivers and limit young people’s access to alcohol.
The owners of all seven mini-markets in the city that sell both gasoline and alcohol have objected to the proposed ordinance, saying they will lose money if it passes, Hughston said.
At least 30 California cities have enacted similar ordinances. But the Legislature is considering a bill that would take away the authority of cities and counties to impose blanket bans on the sale of gasoline and alcohol from the same outlet.
The hearing will take place at City Hall during the regularly scheduled 2 p.m. meeting of the Board of Directors.
