Pope John Paul II, drenched by a tropical downpour, praised local religious traditions today while firemen drained the bulging canopy above him so the water would not burst through.

Tens of thousands of people turned out despite the torrent, chanting in rhyming Spanish: “It’s raining, it’s raining, but we’re staying!” John Paul appeared relaxed on the final day of his barnstorming tour through Argentina’s vast interior. He spoke a few phrases through the pelting rain in Guarani, a native Indian tongue still used here, to whoops and cheers from the crowd.
