Sen. Robert T. Stafford (R-Vt.), one of the Senate’s leading environmentalists, announced today he will not seek reelection in 1988.

Stafford, 73, who chaired the Senate committee on the environment from 1981 to 1987, announced his retirement in the same way he has operated in Congress--without fanfare. His staff was notified of the decision only this afternoon, by Stafford’s administrative assistant. The senator had already left the office for a week’s vacation.
