Irvine : City Slates ‘Community Development Week’

Share

The City Council has declared the week ending Friday “Community Development Week” to bolster support for the federal Community Development Block Grant Program.

Founded in 1974, the block grant program serves more than 10,000 county residents annually, according to Maya Dunne, senior planner for Irvine. Primarily benefiting low-income households, the federal grants support health clinics, counseling services, economic development, emergency food and shelter.

Recipients in the county include the SOS Free Medical Clinic, the Orange County Fair Housing Council, the Buena Vista Homeless Shelter in Fullerton and housing programs in Huntington Beach and Santa Ana.

Irvine’s $300,000 grant helps fund Irvine Temporary Housing, child-care facilities and substance abuse programs. Last year, Dunne said, Congress cut the city’s grant by 15% and more reductions are expected next year.
