Sen. Robert T. Stafford (R-Vt.), one of the Senate’s leading environmentalists, announced Friday that he will not seek reelection.

In a statement issued by his office, the 73-year-old senator said: “I am today formally announcing that I will not be a candidate for reelection in 1988.”

His staff was notified of the decision Friday afternoon by Stafford’s administrative assistant. The senator had already left the office for a vacation.

“I have had the immense pleasure of serving the people of Vermont in public office for the last 35 years, and I intend to serve them just as faithfully for the next 20 months,” Stafford said in his statement.

Stafford’s retirement had been considered likely. But his retirement was predicted six years ago also, and Stafford sought and won another term.

Stafford served as his state’s attorney general, lieutenant governor and governor.
