Airline and railway service returned to normal in Spain after a 24-hour nationwide transport strike that disrupted travel at the start of the Easter vacation. Major highways were packed with cars as Spaniards who had delayed their trips a day to avoid traffic jams caused by the strikes set out for beaches and their hometowns. Tourism officials said that more than 30 chartered jets carrying thousands of foreign visitors began landing at Spanish airports just after the strike ended. Employees of the state-run Iberia and Aviaco airlines, the national railway and the Madrid subway struck for higher salaries and to protest the government’s suggested 5% ceiling on pay boosts.
