UAW negotiators will seek to restore benefits.

Delegates to the union’s bargaining convention in Chicago were told that the union’s suggested goals include restoration of productivity raises; an adjustment in profit-sharing formulas, especially at GM; an updating of contractual cost-of-living increase formulas, and the elimination of merit raises and similar subjective rewards. Delegates listened to and debated a 101-page summary of the goals, which will serve as a guideline in all UAW contract negotiations during the next three years. Contracts with GM and Ford, the two largest UAW employers, expire at midnight Sept. 14. Talks with both auto makers are set to begin in July.
