A proposal to limit the practice and playing dates in several sports will be pushed by the NCAA Council at the association’s special convention in June, NCAA President Wilford Bailey said.

The meeting in Dallas may take on greater meaning, however, if a replacement for retiring NCAA Executive Director Walter Byers is announced at that time.

The council will ask that the seasons for sports such as baseball, golf, tennis indoor and outdoor track and volleyball be reduced to create a “balance between athletics activities and academics.” The committee of the council recommended that no sport be allowed to have formal practice playing dates for more than 26 weeks a year.

The measure would not affect football and basketball, since those sports already have limits on games and practice.
