An Orange County Superior Court jury acquitted Los Angeles Police Chief Daryl F. Gates’ 30-year-old son of burglarizing his sister’s home, but found him guilty of a misdemeanor charge of unlawful entry. The jurors were excused after deadlocking on another charge of grand theft. Lowell Scott Gates was sentenced to six months in jail, but Judge Richard M. Luesebrink gave him credit for time already served and ordered him released. Gates was charged after a break-in Nov. 29 at the home of Kathy and Sam Perricone in which a gold coin and bracelet valued at about $700 were taken. Gates testified that he pawned the items but had planned to buy them back and return them. In a 1985 case, Gates pleaded guilty to robbery and theft of narcotics from a Huntington Beach pharmacy. He was sentenced to a year in jail and three years’ probation.
