The New England Patriots have filed tampering charges with the NFL against former coach Ron Meyer, the Boston Globe reported.
Team officials said Meyer tampered with Irving Fryar since the end of the season in an attempt to get the wide receiver to play for the Indianapolis Colts, who are coached by Meyer.
Meyer was coach of the Patriots when the team made the Nebraska star its No. 1 draft choice. Meyer was fired during the 1984 season and replaced by Raymond Berry.
“I’m stunned (by the charges),” Meyer said. “I don’t understand it. All I know is that it supposedly comes from something I said about Irving.”
