A 22-year-old Huntington Beach woman has died of major head injuries after she was thrown from a motorcycle that hit a car stopped for a red light, police said.

Karen Lee Garner, who was a passenger on the motorcycle, died in the emergency room of Fountain Valley Regional Hospital shortly after 11 p.m. Friday, according to Lt. Chuck Poe. The driver of the motorcycle, Paul Joslin, 21, of El Toro Marine Corps Air Station, was taken to Huntington Humana Hospital, where he was treated for a fractured pelvis, Poe said.

Neither Garner nor Joslin were wearing a helmet, Poe said.

Joslin apparently drove his motorcycle into a car that was stopped at a red light at Beach Boulevard and Utica Street shortly before 8:30 p.m., Poe said. Joslin also was thrown from the motorcycle.

Joslin underwent surgery Saturday afternoon, a hospital spokeswoman said. He is listed in serious condition in the intensive care unit, she said. Joslin has been arrested on suspicion of felony drunk driving and vehicular manslaughter, Poe said.
