The George Webb Corp. Sunday announced plans to give away more than 112,000 hamburgers this Wednesday to celebrate the Milwaukee Brewers’ 12 consecutive victories.

“This is the greatest thing to happen to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and this restaurant chain,” Dave Stamm, president of the George Webb Corp.

The Brewers extended their winning streak to 12 games Sunday when they rallied past the Texas Rangers, 6-4, to break an American League record for most consecutive victories to start the season.

Stamm said restaurant founder George Webb predicted the American Assn. Brewers would win 17 games in a row in the 1940s. When the National League Braves moved to Milwaukee in 1955, he predicted 12 consecutive victories. Webb died in 1957.

The Brewers moved to Milwaukee from Seattle in 1970. When the Brewers won 10 consecutive games in 1979, the restaurant chain indicated it would give away 12,000 hamburgers if the winning streak reached 12.

“We had hoped for a long time they would do this,” Stamm said of the 12-game streak. He said the giveaway would begin at noon Wednesday at all 48 George Webb restaurants in Wisconsin and would conclude at 8 p.m. Each customer is limited to one free hamburger.
