The Orange County Transit District Board of Directors Monday awarded a $147,000 contract to a private bus line that will shuttle commuters on a Huntington Beach-to-Los Angeles express route, a district spokeswoman said.

On May 1, Mark IV Charter Lines of Gardena will take over the daily route, which runs from Center Drive and Gothard Street in Huntington Beach to Temple and San Pedro streets in downtown Los Angeles, spokeswoman Claudia Keith said.

The Southern California Rapid Transit District has operated the express route for five years under contract with OCTD. Mark IV was awarded the 14-month contract as part of the board’s 2-year-old “privatization policy,” Keith said.

“It was no reflection on the RTD at all. This was seen as an opportunity to involve a private contractor in district services,” Keith said.
