A new military revolt erupted today in the northern city of Salta, less than 48 hours after President Raul Alfonsin had put down a similar uprising, the semi-official news agency Telam reported.

The fresh uprising was blamed on tensions set off by a growing purge of officers and discontent among younger army officers objecting to the new army commander selected. Telam said the 5th Engineering Regiment, led by Maj. Jorge Duran, was in revolt. Other news reports quoted a statement by Duran that said: “The internal problem of the force (the army) continues.” He said he was not staging a military coup.
