Intellectuals tend not to live as long as other Chinese because of past persecution, low salaries and poor working conditions, an official newspaper said Monday.

The China Daily said that was the conclusion of the Chinese Peoples Political Consultative Conference, an advisory body made up primarily of intellectuals.

It quoted Yang Le, a mathematician, as telling the conference that middle-aged intellectuals are especially vulnerable to health problems because of poor work conditions and low pay.

The newspaper said the life expectancy for intellectuals is less than the national average of 68, but it did not specify what their life expectancy is. An intellectual in China is anyone who has graduated from college or is involved in academic pursuits.
