State officials on Tuesday took steps to prevent cancer-causing PCBs from washing off the Chatham Brothers toxic waste site on Bernardo Avenue in Escondido.

Workers clad in protective gear placed plastic sheeting over the site to control erosion and built a berm along its boundary to prevent migration of the PCBs. They also removed topsoil from a the yard of a house across the street that was found to contain trace amounts of the contaminants.

A spokeswoman for the state Department of Health Services said the work was a “remedial action” that will contain the contamination until a complete cleanup can occur sometime next year.
